Effects of Transplantation On Symptoms Pain. Joint Locking, Swelling and restricted motion are very likely to be resolved after transplantation. Patello-femoral pain not be resolved. Safety Profile Inn Human Studies Complications reported to date or complications which may occur but have not yet been observed include: Adhesions post arthrotomy, Hypertrophic change of the graft, detachment of graft, Implant removal, Septic knee, Synovitis, Deep vein thrombosis. No known adverse reaction is associated with the implant itself, though allergic reactions to serum components cannot be completely rated out. Transformation of cartilage denved cells following implantation has mot been observed, and is considered very unlikely. Pathophysiology of Cartilage Defects Lesions in articular cartilage fail to heal in adults and adolescents. Larger articular cartilage defects often cause progressive degenerative changes due to changes in joint biomechanics. The critical cut-off point appears to be defects which are larger than one square centimeter. Defect depth is also of importance, since thin defects which do not involve the entire thickness of the cartilage, do not progress. On the other hand, defects which reach the subchondral bone often tend to progress. The ultimate result of articular cartilage destruction is post traumatic osteoarthritis. |
